In high school I was friends with a young lady whose family had to flee the Bosnian war. At the time, I had never experienced anything traumatic – the war was “over there”, away from NZ. The realities of it were a foreign concept. Alas, I was not able to fully comprehend my friends experiences.
Roll forward 20+ years and I reconnected with her. I traveled to Sarajevo and asked her to show me her Sarajevo. She told me and showed me – the scars from the shrapnel on the buildings, where she lived, the front line and what life was like for all Bosnians’. I now understand and feel a great sadness that she, her family and Boasians’ had to go through such horrors.
One saving grace was volunteers dug a tunnel which went under the airport to safety. Not everyone made it to the tunnel, many tried to run across the airport runway. People, food and clothes and medical supplies were transported secretly through the tunnel. It was their pathway of hope – a way out, a way to survival.
